Grambling State Can't Hold off Late Rally by Texas Southern

PEARL, Miss. | Grambling State fell in a hard-fought 9-8 decision to Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi, as the Tigers were unable to hold off a late rally in the ninth inning.

GSU (1-1) jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. After walks to Cameron Hill and Trey Bridges and a walk to Chirs Marcellus, Shannon Martin delivered a two-run single to right field to put the Tigers ahead 2-0. Texas Southern answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single by Jonathan Trejo to even the score. 

The Tigers regained the advantage in the second inning. Ryan Davis reached on an error, and Hill followed with a two-run home run to left center to give Grambling a 4-2 lead. Texas Southern (2-0) cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Nate Lopez.

Grambling State extended its lead in the third when Julio VasQuez singled through the left side to drive in Martin, making it 5-3. Texas Southern added a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Anthony Ruiz, trimming the margin to 5-4. 

In the fifth, Hasani Johnson walked and later scored on another RBI single from Martin, pushing the Tigers' lead to 6-4. Grambling added another run in the sixth as Martavius Thomas doubled and later scored on a single by Hill to make it 7-4. The Tigers added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Aidan Lopez to extend the lead to 8-4.

Texas Southern began its comeback in the eighth, scoring two runs highlighted by an RBI single from Miguel Morales to cut the deficit to 8-6. In the ninth, the Tigers loaded the bases with two walks and a single, and a bases-loaded walk and a two-run error allowed Texas Southern to score three runs and walk off with the 9-8 victory.

Martin led Grambling State at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a walk. Hill finished 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Thomas added a double and scored once.

On the mound, Trent Shaw started and allowed four runs over three innings. H. Phillips provided 4.1 innings of relief, giving up two runs, while Raphael Capistran was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in the ninth.

GSU totaled nine hits and drew 11 walks but committed a costly error in the ninth that proved decisive.
