Late Rally Falls Short as Grambling Drops 11-10 Decision to Wiley

GRAMBLING, La. |  Grambling State mounted a furious late comeback, highlighted by multiple home runs and a nine-run final two innings, but fell just short in an 11-10 loss to Wiley on Tuesday night at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.

Wiley jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Wildcats continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning, pushing across another run to extend the margin to 6-0. Grambling broke through in the bottom of the fourth when James Woody doubled to center field to drive in a run, putting the Tigers on the board.

Wiley added insurance in the sixth inning with a five-run frame, taking advantage of a fielding error and a pair of extra-base hits to stretch the lead to 11-2. Grambling continued to battle, scoring a run in the fifth and another in the seventh to cut into the deficit, but still trailed by eight heading into the final two innings.

The Tigers' offense came alive in the eighth inning as Charles Ashe III launched a three-run home run to left field, followed by a solo shot from Ryan Davis to make it an 11-7 game. Grambling carried that momentum into the ninth inning, when Ashe III delivered again with a three-run homer to left field, bringing the Tigers within one run at 11-10. However, the rally ended there as Wiley recorded the final two outs to secure the win.

Ashe III led the Tigers offensively with two home runs and six RBIs, providing the spark for Grambling's late surge. Woody finished with three hits, including two doubles, and drove in a run, while Hasani Johnson reached base four times with three walks and a hit. Davis added a pinch-hit home run to contribute to the comeback effort.

On the mound, Mohamed Horati took the loss for Grambling state, allowing five runs over three innings. The Tigers' bullpen worked five innings of relief, highlighted by a scoreless inning from Raphael Capistran.

Despite the loss, Grambling's late offensive explosion showed the resilience and power potential of the lineup as the Tigers continue their early-season slate.
