GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State breezed an 83-62 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Monday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
GSU improved to 12-15 overall and 6-8 in SWAC play while MVSU fell to 2-27 overall and 1-14 in conference action.
The Tigers used a strong second half to pull away, outscoring the Delta Devils 45-26 after taking a 38-36 lead into the break. Grambling shot 53.8 percent from the field for the game and converted 22-of-31 attempts from the free throw line.
Antonio Munoz led the way with 21 points, adding four rebounds, three assists and a block. Jimel Lane posted 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Roderick Coffee III finished with 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Jamil Muttilib chipped in nine points, and Derrius Ward added 10 points off the bench.
Devyn Franklin contributed six points and seven rebounds, and the Tigers received solid bench production from Saliou Seye, Chancellor Perkins and Mekhi Fitts as Grambling outscored Mississippi Valley State 18-9 in bench points.
Michael James scored 19 points to lead the Delta Devils, with Xzayvion Childress adding 12 points and Daniel Mayfield contributing 11.
Grambling finished with a 38-33 rebounding advantage and forced 19 Mississippi Valley State turnovers, converting those into 28 points. The Tigers also scored 38 points in the paint and added 17 fast-break points in the win.
