BATON ROUGE, La. | Grambling State fell to Northeastern 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium.
With the loss, Grambling State moved to 3-6 on the season, while Northeastern improved to 1-5.
Northeastern struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Gerety singled and later scored on Carter Bentley's RBI double down the right-field line. Eric Cha followed with an RBI single to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.
Grambling was limited to just two hits on the afternoon but broke through in the sixth. Trey Bridges, who was hit by a pitch three times in the game, opened the inning by reaching after being plunked. Cameron Hill followed with a double to left-center field, scoring Bridges to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Northeastern responded in the bottom half of the sixth. Henry DiGiorgio reached on a walk and advanced into scoring position before eventually crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Harrison Feinberg. The run was unearned after a throwing error extended the inning and pushed the Huskies' lead to 3-1.
The Huskies added an insurance run in the eighth inning on another sacrifice fly, this time from Carmelo Musacchia, scoring Chris Walsh to make it 4-1.
Keevyn Goss (1-2) took the loss for Grambling State, allowing two runs on four hits over four innings. He walked five and struck out three. Payton Allen pitched the final four innings, surrendering two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out one.
Robbie O'Connor (1-1) earned the win for Northeastern, tossing five innings and allowing one run on one hit while striking out four. Ryan Griffin recorded his first save of the season, working a scoreless ninth.
Grambling State put the tying run on base in the ninth after Aidan Lopez and Daniel Soukup II drew consecutive walks, but the rally was cut short by a game-ending double play.
Hill finished 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Tigers offensively. Hasani Johnson added a stolen base as Grambling swiped two bags on the day.
Northeastern collected eight hits, with Gerety and Cha each recording two. The Huskies drew six walks and stole multiple bases to keep pressure on the Tigers' defense throughout the afternoon.
