Grambling State Registers 17 Hits in Win at Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Grambling State erupted for six runs in the third inning and pounded out 17 hits as the Tigers defeated Alabama State 9-5 on Friday evening at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

With the win, Grambling State improved to 4-12 overall and 1-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), while Alabama State dropped to 8-8 and 0-1 in conference.

The Tigers broke the game open in the top of the third inning. Chris Marcellus started the rally with a solo home run to left field to give Grambling State a 1-0 lead. Dillon Braxton followed with a single before Hasani Johnson ripped an RBI double down the left-field line to make it 2-0.

Grambling State continued to apply pressure as Cameron Hill singled and later stole second. Aidan Lopez drove in another run with a single, and Shannon Martin brought home Hill with a sacrifice bunt to extend the lead to 4-0. With two runners aboard, Charles Ashe III delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run single through the left side, pushing the Tigers' advantage to 6-0.

Alabama State responded in the bottom of the third when Jackson Williams hit a three-run homer to left field, trimming the deficit to 6-3.

The Hornets added two more runs in the fifth inning. Devin Chandler doubled to begin the rally and later scored on an RBI single by Jose Alfonso. Breydon Divine followed with a bunt single that brought home another run, cutting the Grambling State lead to 6-5.

Grambling State answered in the seventh inning. Lopez singled to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Martin before Ashe delivered again, lining an RBI single to right field to extend the Tigers' lead to 7-5.

The Tigers added insurance in the ninth inning. Julio Vasquez singled and moved to third on Ashe's fourth hit of the night. Marcellus drove in a run with a groundout before Braxton followed with an RBI single to right field, giving Grambling State a 9-5 cushion.

Ashe led the Tigers at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Braxton finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Johnson collected three hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Lopez added two hits and two runs scored, and Marcellus contributed a home run and two RBIs.

Keevyn Goss started on the mound for Grambling State, allowing three runs on four hits over four innings while striking out four. Trevor Esparza (1-1) earned the win in relief after pitching one inning. Rafael Capistran delivered a strong outing out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Payton Allen recorded the final out to pick up his first save of the season.

Grambling State finished with 17 hits while Alabama State managed nine. The Hornets were led by Williams, who drove in three runs with his third-inning home run.
