Grambling State Can't Keep Pace With Northeastern

BATON ROUGE, La. | Grambling State was unable to overcome a late surge by Northeastern, falling 10-0 on Sunday evening at Alex Box Stadium.

With the loss, Grambling State dropped to 3-8 on the season, while Northeastern improved to 2-6.

The Tigers had an early opportunity to strike in the bottom of the first inning when Daniel Soukup II led off with a double to left field. Soukup advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Northeastern starter Andrew Wertz recorded a strikeout and two flyouts to keep the game scoreless.

Northeastern broke through in the third inning. Harrison Feinberg singled, stole second and third, and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The visitors extended the advantage in the fourth as Cooper Tarantino delivered a two-run home run to left field, pushing the margin to 3-0.

Grambling threatened again in the fifth. Julio VasQuez drew a walk and Hasani Johnson followed with a single through the right side. After Charles Ashe III laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, the Tigers were unable to capitalize as Northeastern escaped the inning with a strikeout and a flyout.

Soukup finished 1 for 3 with a double, while Trey Bridges added a double of his own. Cameron Hill, Aidan Lopez, Shannon Martin, Johnson and Ashe each recorded singles as Grambling totaled seven hits. However, the Tigers were limited to one walk and struck out 10 times.

Trenton Shaw (0-2) took the loss for Grambling State, allowing three runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Mohamed Horati worked 2 2/3 innings in relief, surrendering two runs, while Rafael Capistran and Nick Robinson also saw action out of the bullpen.

Northeastern added to its lead in the seventh on back-to-back solo home runs by Feinberg and Ryan Gerety to make it 5-0. The Huskies extended the advantage in the eighth when Matt Brinker delivered a two-run double to right field.

The Huskies put the game out of reach in the ninth, plating three runs on two hits and three walks, highlighted by a two-run single from Gerety.

Wertz (1-1) earned the win for Northeastern, tossing five shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Andrew Basel and Tom Mahoney combined to close out the final four innings to secure the shutout.
