HOUSTON, Texas | Grambling State put together multiple offensive surges, including a pair of three-run home runs from Charles Ashe III, but the Tigers were unable to keep pace with Texas Southern in a 15-8 loss Friday afternoon at MacGregor Park.
GSU fell to 8-16 overall and 5-2 in the SWAC, while TSU improved to 11-10 and 6-1 in conference.
Ashe delivered one of the strongest performances of the day for GSU, going 3-for-5 with six RBI and two home runs. His first blast came in the third inning, a three-run shot that cut the deficit to 4-3. He struck again in the eighth with another three-run homer that pulled Grambling State within 10-8.
GSU finished with 12 hits, highlighted by multi-hit outings from Trey Bridges (2-for-4, two runs), Aidan Lopez (2-for-4, RBI, two stolen bases), Shannon Martin (2-for-3, one run) and James Woody (2-for-5).
Texas Southern capitalized early, scoring four runs in the first two innings and taking advantage of three Grambling State errors. After GSU tied the game in the top of the fourth, TSU responded with a three-run frame of its own to regain control.
The host Tigers collected 18 hits, including home runs from Jonathan Trejo and Shaun Williams. Trejo went 3-for-6 with a homer and three RBI, while Williams finished with two hits, four RBI and a late three-run home run that keyed the five-run eighth inning for TSU.
Grambling State trailed 10-5 entering the eighth before Ashe's second home run narrowed the gap, but Texas Southern answered with five runs in the bottom half to put the game out of reach.
Keevyn Goss (1-2) took the loss for GSU after allowing eight hits and seven earned runs in three innings. Trevor Esparza and Rafael Capistran combined for the remaining mound work.
GSU used its speed effectively with four stolen bases — one each from Hill, Lopez, Martin and Martavius Thomas — and turned three double plays defensively.
