Grambling State Downs Texas Southern in Extra innings

HOUSTON, Texas | Grambling State capitalized on a four-run 10th inning and a strong relief effort from Hampton Phillips to secure a 9-5 extra-inning victory over Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon.

Grambling State (9-16 overall, 6-2 SWAC) broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the 10th when James Woody drew a leadoff walk and Daniel Soukup II followed with a single. After Hasani Johnson worked his fifth walk of the game to load the bases, Trey Bridges delivered the go-ahead moment, driving a two-run single into right to put GSU ahead 7-5. Johnson and Bridges then executed a double steal before Aidan Lopez's RBI popout made it 8-5. Bridges later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead.

Bridges finished with three hits and five RBIs, including a pair of run-scoring singles. Johnson reached base six times, going 1-for-1 with five walks, two runs and a triple. Charles Ashe III added two hits, including a second-inning home run and a seventh-inning RBI double.

Woody reached base four times and scored twice, while Shannon Martin, Lopez and Soukup each contributed key extra-base hits or timely baserunning. Grambling totaled 10 hits and stole six bases.

On the mound, right-hander Keyon Guillory delivered six strong innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts. After Texas Southern tied the game with a two-run eighth, Phillips entered in the ninth and delivered two shutout innings with two strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.

Texas Southern (no record listed in box file) was led by Jonathan Trejo, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Marco Mueses added a solo home run in the eighth to trim the GSU lead to 5-4 before TSU ultimately forced extra innings. Tigers pitching struggled with command, issuing 11 walks and hitting three batters.

Grambling took its first lead in the fourth inning when Bridges singled home two runs, putting GSU ahead 4-2. Ashe's RBI double in the seventh made it 5-2 before TSU mounted its late push.

Phillips retired all six batters he faced in the ninth and 10th, sealing the road victory.
