HAMMOND, La. | A fast start for Grambling State was erased by a big fourth inning as Southeastern Louisiana pulled away for a 13-3 victory on Friday evening at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Grambling (3-10) jumped on the board first and briefly held the lead before Southeastern Louisiana (7-7) broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning.
The Tigers manufactured the game's first run in the second inning. Shannon Martin led off with a single and moved into scoring position when Hasani Johnson followed with a bunt single. After Julio VasQuez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up, Chris Marcellus delivered an RBI single through the left side to plate Martin and give GSU a 1-0 lead.
Southeastern Louisiana answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the score at 1-1 on an RBI single by Justin Williams.
Grambling regained the advantage in the third inning thanks to a big swing from Trey Bridges. Martavius Thomas worked a leadoff walk, and Bridges followed by blasting a two-run home run to left-center field — his first of the season — putting the Tigers ahead 3-1.
The Lions began to chip away in the bottom of the third, drawing a bases-loaded walk to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Southeastern Louisiana then turned the game decisively in the fourth inning. After loading the bases with three walks, Brody Capps launched a grand slam to left-center field to give the Lions their first lead of the night at 6-3.
The inning continued to unravel for Grambling as Southeastern Louisiana added five more runs in the frame. Peyton Woods and Connor Cuff each singled before Alex Perry raced around the bases for a three-run inside-the-park home run. Later in the inning, Williams and Ben Robichaux added RBI singles as the Lions surged ahead 11-3.
Southeastern Louisiana extended its lead in the fifth when Cuff connected on a solo home run to left-center, and Robichaux added another run in the sixth with a solo shot to center field.
Grambling collected six hits in the contest. Bridges led the Tigers offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Johnson added two hits, while Martin and Marcellus each recorded a hit.
Keevyn Goss (1-3) took the loss for Grambling after allowing five runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts in three innings of work. Mohamed Horati pitched three innings in relief and struck out two while allowing two runs.
Southeastern Louisiana finished with 15 hits, led by Robichaux, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run. Perry drove in three runs, while Capps recorded four RBIs with his grand slam.
