LORMAN, Miss. | The Grambling State Tigers softball team split a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader against Alcorn State on Wednesday, rallying late to claim an 8–7 victory in game one before falling 9–2 in the second match.
In game one, Grambling State struck first in the second inning when
Logan-Ray Gaspar delivered an RBI triple to score
Z'Natria Evans for a 1–0 lead.
Alcorn State answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
The Tigers responded in the third as
Cadashia Collins drove in a run and Evans followed with a two-RBI triple to give Grambling a 4–1 advantage.
Alcorn State battled back tying the game in the fourth inning before taking a 7–4 lead with a three-run sixth inning.
Grambling State mounted a dramatic rally in the seventh, as Evans delivered a two-RBI double to cut the deficit to one.
Ziya Donaldson followed with an RBI single to tie the game, and Gaspar laid down a bunt single to bring home the go-ahead run and secure the 8–7 win.
Evans led the Tigers offensively, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Gaspar added two hits and two RBIs.
Erin Gibbs earned the win in relief, allowing just one earned run over three innings.
In game two, Alcorn State jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning.
Grambling State answered in the third tying the game at 2–2 on RBI singles from Ashunte Specks and Evans.
However, Alcorn State responded with a three-run third inning and broke the game open with four more runs in the fifth to take control.
Grambling State was unable to generate further offense finishing with five hits in the contest.
Specks and Evans each recorded an RBI to lead the Tigers, while
Kamryn Broussard and
Kamille Carter added hits.
Erin Gibbs was charged with the loss after allowing five runs in relief.
