Tigers Build Early Lead, Can't Fend Off Late McNeese Rally

LAKE CHARLES, La. | Grambling State carried a three-run lead into the sixth inning, but McNeese used a late surge to rally past the Tigers 7-3 on Tuesday night at Joe Miller Ballpark. 

Grambling (11-24) jumped out in front with two runs in the third inning and added another in the sixth before the Cowboys answered with seven unanswered runs over the final three frames. McNeese improved to 20-17 with the victory. 

The Tigers struck first in the top of the third. Nicholas Jackson Jr. opened the inning with a single and later scored when Aidan Lopez reached on a McNeese fielding error. Dillon Braxton then crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give GSU a 2-0 advantage. 

Grambling extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning. Cameron Hill singled and moved to third after a Martavius Thomas base hit and a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Martin. Hill scored on another wild pitch to put the Tigers ahead by three. 

McNeese broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Marcus Heusohn delivered a sacrifice fly before Isaiah Keller ripped a two-run double down the right field line to tie the game at 3-3. 

The Cowboys took control in the seventh. Connor Walker led off the inning with a solo home run to give McNeese its first lead of the night. Later in the frame, Hayden Stringfellow drove home two runs with a double to right center, and DJ Pinkerton followed with an RBI double to stretch the margin to 7-3. 

Grambling managed five hits on the night, with Braxton, Bridges, Hill, Thomas and Jackson Jr. each recording one. Braxton scored once and added a double, while Hill also crossed the plate. 

Rafael Capistran turned in a strong relief outing for the Tigers, allowing three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings with two strikeouts. Keyon Guillory and Nick Robinson combined for 2.2 scoreless innings to begin the game. 

Jake Blackwell earned the win in relief for McNeese to improve to 5-0, while Kejuan Burnett was charged with the loss for Grambling State.
