Tigers Clinch Series, Beats PVAMU 8-6

GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State capitalized on Prairie View A&M miscues and held off a late rally to earn an 8-6 victory in the Southwestern Athletic Conference series opener on Saturday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.

With the win, Grambling State improved to 13-24 overall and 10-7 in SWAC play. Prairie View A&M dropped to 7-30 overall and 3-14 in conference.

PVAMU struck first in the opening inning when Michael Burroughs delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Ethan Walker for a 1-0 lead. GSU answered immediately in the bottom half and used aggressive baserunning plus Panther errors to seize control.

After Dillon Braxton was hit by a pitch and Cameron Hill singled, Charles Ashe III tied the game with an RBI groundout. Later in the frame, Julio Vasquez reached on an error that allowed both Hill and Aidan Lopez to score, giving the Tigers a 3-1 advantage after one inning.

Prairie View responded with two runs in the second to even the score at 3-3, but Grambling regained the lead in the bottom half when Ryan Davis scored on a throwing error to make it 4-3.

The Tigers created separation in the fifth inning. Chris Marcellus opened the frame with a walk and later scored on Braxton's RBI single. After another Panther error extended the inning, Trey Bridges reached safely as two more runs crossed the plate, stretching Grambling's lead to 7-3.

PVAMU made things interesting in the eighth. Walker doubled to begin the inning and the Panthers plated three runs, trimming the deficit to 7-6. With runners threatening, GSU escaped further damage and answered in the bottom of the inning when Ashe lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Bridges for an important insurance run and an 8-6 cushion.

Rafael Capistran shut the door in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the season. He retired all three batters he faced and recorded a strikeout.

Hampton Phillips earned the win in relief for Grambling State, improving to 3-3. Phillips tossed 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit while no earned runs crossed the plate. Keevyn Goss started and struck out six over 4.1 innings.

Braxton paced the Tigers offensively, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while also stealing three bases. Marcellus added two hits and scored once, while Hill, Lopez, Martin and Davis each contributed a hit.

Walker led Prairie View A&M offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Hunter Ham also collected three hits for the Panthers.
