GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University will honor one of the most celebrated players in program history on Saturday, April 11th, retiring the jersey of former Tigers standout and Major League Baseball All-Star Ralph Garr at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park during GSU's home series against Southern University.
Garr, affectionately known throughout baseball as "The Roadrunner" for his elite speed and hitting ability, was a transformative figure in Grambling State baseball under the leadership of legendary coach and university president Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones. His decorated collegiate career propelled him into a decade-long MLB tenure highlighted by league-leading numbers, national recognition and a reputation as one of the purest hitters of his era.
COLLEGIATE LEGACY AT GRAMBLING STATE
Garr starred for the Tigers from 1964–67, emerging as one of the most dynamic offensive threats in program history. Under President Jones, he helped guide GSU baseball to national prominence and developed a skill set that would make him a premier professional prospect.
Garr earned All-SWAC honors and was known for his exceptional contact hitting, speed on the bases and standout defensive play in the outfield.
His success at Grambling State led to him being selected by the Atlanta Braves in the third round of the 1967 MLB Draft, beginning one of the most successful professional careers by any former GSU baseball student-athlete.
PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND MLB ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Garr quickly became one of the Braves' most reliable offensive players, making his Major League debut in 1968. He enjoyed his breakout season in 1971, posting a .343 batting average to win the National League batting title while registering 219 hits and 30 stolen bases. That same season, he finished second in the NL MVP voting.
Over his 13-year career with the Braves, Chicago White Sox and California Angels, Garr compiled more than 1,500 hits, recorded seven seasons hitting .300 or better, and earned an All-Star selection in 1974. His blend of speed, consistency and competitiveness made him one of the most respected players of his era.
RETURNING HOME TO BE HONORED
Garr's jersey retirement will take place prior to Grambling State's Saturday's game against Southern. The event will recognize his lasting impact on the university, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and the game of baseball. Several former players, alumni and members of the Grambling community are expected to attend the ceremony.
Garr has remained closely connected to the Braves organization following his playing career, including work as a scout and ambassador. His continued commitment to baseball and to Grambling State has helped inspire generations of student-athletes who followed in his footsteps.
The April 11 jersey retirement will permanently enshrine Garr among Grambling State's all-time greats and celebrate a career that began on the very field where he will be honored.
