RUSTON, La. | Grambling State and Alabama A&M played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday at the GSU Soccer Complex, with both teams missing chances from the penalty spot in a match that opened SWAC play for each program.
The result moves Grambling to 1-7-2 overall (0-0-1 SWAC), while Alabama A&M sits at 2-4-3 (0-0-1 SWAC). A crowd of 46 was on hand.
Alabama A&M held the edge in shots, finishing with an 11-6 advantage, but neither side could find the back of the net. Grambling goalkeeper Alina Arneth was busy throughout, turning away six shots to keep the clean sheet, while AAM's Adriana Durango matched her with four saves of her own.
Both teams had golden opportunities to break the deadlock from the penalty spot. In the second half, Alabama A&M's Méghane St-Cyr had her penalty kick attempt saved, and Grambling's Kaylen Jankans saw her own penalty kick attempt turned away as well, keeping the match level.
Grambling controlled the corner kick battle, forcing four corners to Alabama A&M's one, with Olivia Kowall leading the Tigers offensively with two shots on goal. Anaiya Morris, Kianna Logan and Kaylen Jankans each also got shots on frame for GSU. For Alabama A&M, Czaske Deane was the most active attacker with five shots, and Ryan McLemore and Charlotte Cuthbertson also tested Arneth in goal.
Two yellow cards were issued in the match, both to Alabama A&M — Albany Rios in the 57th minute and Czaske Deane in the 80th minute.
