Register joins GSU after spending the past two seasons at Florida State as an Assistant Coach/ Video Coordinator.
Register brings extensive basketball experience on both the college and high school levels to Grambling State. He has worked with numerous Division I scholarship athletes and NBA Draft picks, most recently Jamir Watkins (FSU) who was selected as the 43rd pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
During his time at Florida State, some of his responsibilities included assisting Head Coach Leonard Hamilton and his staff with opponent scouting through extensive video breakdowns and game preparation, assisting with on campus recruiting efforts, practice planning and on court skill development.
Prior to his arrival at FSU, Register was an assistant coach at Bishop Walsh High School in Cumberland, Md., (2021-23) at the prep level. At Bishop Walsh, he helped the Spartans to a pair of wins over two top-25 nationally ranked teams and helped six players earn Division I scholarships. Before going to Bishop Walsh, Coach AJ was as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2020-21). As a member of the UMES staff, he was responsible for on-court player development, regional recruiting, and academic success. Under his watchful academic eyes, the Hawks earned a cumulative 3.2 grade point average.
Coach AJ was the Director of Scouting and Analytics at George Washington University during the 2019-20 season.
Coach AJ spent the 2018-19 season as part of Jamion Christian's staff at Siena. He helped the Saints to a winning overall record and an 11-7 mark along with a second-place finish in MAAC play. Register helped coach Jalen Pickett who earned All-MAAC First-Team, Freshman of the Year and 2023 NBA Draft pick Jalen Pickett.
Register spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Montverde Academy where he helped the Eagles’ 2017-18 squad to a perfect 35-0 record and a high school national championship. In 2016-17, Montverde went 26-5 and finished runner-up at nationals. Montverde was a combined 61-5 during his two seasons at the Orlando-based athletic powerhouse. During his time at Montverde, he coached 5 players who were drafted to the NBA, RJ Barrett (NY Knicks), Andrew Nembhard (Indiana Pacers), Filip Petrusiv (Philadelphia 76ers), Balsa Koprivica (Charlotte Hornets), and Dariq Whitehead (Brooklyn Nets).
Register began his stint at UCF as a graduate assistant for the 2014-15 season, before earning a promotion to Director of Operations/Video Coordinator in 2015-16. While at UCF, Register earned a master’s degree in Career and Technical Education in 2016.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alabama's Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration. While an undergraduate at Alabama, he worked as a student manager for the men's basketball program for three seasons.
