Grambling, LA---Christian Anthony recorded two interceptions to pave the way as the Tigers defense posted the first three scores for the G-Men tonight in Grambling's, 38-17, pounding of the Demons of Northwestern State to give Grambling State its 500th win.
It was a rainy evening in the piney hills of north Louisiana which made for an evening full of turnovers for both teams. The Tigers struggled out of the blocks as their first four possessions ended in turnovers allowing the Demons to jump out to a, 14-0, lead.
Grambling finally made their way to the scoreboard late in the second quarter when defensive back Desmond Leonard stripped NSU's Quentin Castille and returned the fumble 37 yards for the score to cut the lead in half just before the break.
Down, 14-7, Anthony recorded the first of his interceptions of John Hundley and returned it 14 yards before pitching it to Nigel Copeland who returned it the rest of the way for a 24 yard score. On the ensuing possession Anthony once again picked off Hundley and this time returned it himself for the score. Place kicker, Ari Johnson, added a 30-yard field goal and the Tigers took a, 24-14, lead into the fourth quarter and never looked back.
Following a John Shaughnessy 27-yard field goal for the Demons the Tigers used a three play drive highlighted by tailback Frank Warren's 80 yard scamper up the middle to score when offensive lineman Victor Philips recovered a Cornelius Walker fumble in the endzone.
The Tigers continued to pound it out on the ground with the Warren-Walker tandem. Following a 23 yard burst on a busted play off of the right end by Warren, Walker burst up the middle for the final score.
Warren led all rushers collecting 156 yards on 12 carries; while Walker added another 53 on 18 carries. Quarter back Greg Dillon completed 18-of-32 passes for 144 yards. Defensively T.J. McCord had 15 tackles (11 solo) for the Tigers. Anthony also had 8 tackles a sack and a forced fumble.
Castille led the Demons ground game with 109 yards on 18 carries with a score. Handley completed 13-of-28 passes but was picked off four times. Blake Delcambre recorded 11 tackles, with Rogers Loche and Gary Riggs adding nine apiece.
The Tigers will return to action next weekend when they travel to Jackson, MS to face the Tigers of Jackson State.
