Huntsville, ALA---For the second time in three years the Grambling State Tigers have played spoiler of Alabama A&M's Homecoming as they handed the Bulldogs a, 25-22, loss before an electric crowd of 12, 328 in the Bulldogs' Lewis Crews Stadium.
Down 7-0 early in the first period GSU quarterback
Anthony Carrothers found tailback
Frank Warren for a 66 yard reception to set up a one yard touchdown pass to tight end
Larry Donnell (
Zoltan Riazzo, PAT Good). The Tigers would go on to stake their first lead of the game at the 12:49 mark of the second quarter, 13-7, on a two-yard Warren run (Riazzo, kicked failed).
AAMU's Tony Green found pay dirt for the second time in the game to give the Bulldogs their final lead at 14-13.
Alabama A&M controlled much of the final statistics, as they had 25 first downs to GSU's 14 and won the total offensive yards' battle 404-375. However, Grambling's 13 points on special teams with two 25-yards Riazzo field goals and a kickoff returned by Kenneth Batiste 87 yards for a touchdown kept the Bulldogs at bay.
Warren, the FCS leading rusher, went on to lead all rushers with 136 yards on the ground. He also tallied two receptions for a team high 75 yards for a total all-purpose yardage of 211. Carrothers completed eight passes for 191 yards.
Derrick Wilhite and
Cliff Exama recorded 13 and 10 tackles respectively to lead the Tigers defense.
Green finished with 118 yards rushing on 20 carries with two scores. Quarterback Deaunte Mason completed 15 of 31 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown; he also had 19 carries for 95 yards. Defensively Vernon Marshall and Afu Okosun recorded nine tackles apiece.
Grambling will return to action Saturday October 9th when they return home to host the Hornets of Alabama State.
