Ruston, LA---Despite early season struggles, the Grambling State Lady Tigers volleyball team showed flashes of improvement this weekend though falling 0-3 in the Louisiana Invitational Tournament.
In game one on Friday the Lady Tigers had their best showing of the season thus far in a loss to the host Louisiana Tech 25-20, 25-16 and 25-20.
April Johnson and
Vanessa Brown had six kills each for the Lady Tigers with Davarika Johnson adding 14 assists. Lady Techsters Marcella Braz had 10 kills and four digs. Maria Coelho had 28 assists and six digs.
In the night cap the Lady Tigers woes returned falling 25-11, 25-15 and 25-11 to Texas Tech. Brilliante Osbourne had a team high five kills while Brown and Johnson added four and three respectively.
DaVarika Johnson had nine assists and six digs. For Texas Tech Amanda Dowdy turned in 11 kills and 11 digs.
The Lady Tigers bounced back in the final game on Saturday holding several leads throughout a loss to the Lady Lions of Southeastern 25-23, 25-14 and 25-16.
April Johnson had a team high 10 kills; while
Breonna Loud and
DaVarika Johnson had 13 and 12 assists respectively. Brown had 12 digs and four kills each.
Dollison Paige had 11 kills to lead the Lady Lions. Arianne Cruckshank added 36 assists.
The Lady Tigers (0-10) will return to action Monday as they play host to the Lady Colonels of Nicholls State in their home opener at 6:30PM
