Box Score GRAMBLING, Louisiana (March 18, 2013) – The Grambling State University Tiger baseball team came from behind to win in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon to defeat rival Southern University 7-6 at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
Southern came out of the gates swinging and took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers would get on the board in the third inning, when
Kris Minter had an RBI single scoring
Edwin Drexler making the score 2-1 Southern.
Juan Bueno would hit an RBI double later in the inning bringing
Kris Minter home and the score was tied at two.
In the fourth inning the Jags scored two runs. Brian Ortiz hit a SAC fly scoring Caleb Hatcher and the Tigers gave up a bases loaded walk making the score 4-2 Southern. Grambling would take advantage of a Southern pitching error in the bottom half of the fourth and the Tigers trailed 4-3.
Southern would keep their bats hot as Fernando Morales hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning and the Jags would extend their lead to 5-3.
Both teams would remain scoreless until the bottom of the 7
th inning, when
Brandon Kiser electrified the crowd blasting a three run home run scoring
Juan Bueno and
Jose Longoria and the Tigers would take a 6-5 lead. The Jags would keep clawing back as they scored a run in the top of the eighth inning off of a home run by Brian Rowry and the score was tied at six.
The drama continued to build in the bottom of the eighth inning when
Edwin Drexler hit an RBI single scoring
Jarred Nauls and the Tigers would take the lead for good and go on to win the game 7-6.
The Tigers finished the game with seven runs off of 14 hits and no errors in the game, while the Jaguars had six runs off of nine hits and no errors. The winning pitcher for the Tigers was
Cory Jordan, who had a game high four strikeouts. The losing pitcher for Southern was Zephan Rochelle.
The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday evening as they face the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The first pitch at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park will be at 6 p.m.
