Tigers Lose Home Opener to Bulldogs
Grambling, La (August 31, 2013) – The Grambling State University Tiger football team lost a tough game to start the 2013 campaign to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 23-9 Saturday night at Robinson Stadium in Grambling.
The first quarter was a defensive battle between the Tigers and the Bulldogs both squads stood strong. Neither team gave up much ground as the first stanza ended without either team scoring.
Alabama A&M would get on the board first as the defense forced a safety with 14:45 left in the second quarter as Robert Nelson tackled
Cedric Skinner behind the goal line making the score 2-0 A&M.
The Bulldogs would get the first offensive touchdown of the game with 6:14 left in the first half as Barrington Scott would rush for 2 yards into the endzone with 6:14 left in the first half. The PAT would make the score 9-0 A&M.
The Tigers would get on the board for the first time in the game, when freshman
Johnathan Wallace would make his first collegiate field goal from 20 yards out cutting the deficit to 9-3.
Alanbama A&M would score for the third time in the game as Brandon Wells completed a 2 yard touchdown pass to Toriano Upshaw. The PAT by Jordan Puentas made the score 16-3 Bulldogs at halftime.
The Bulldogs would start the 2
nd half of the game scoring on their first drive as Toriono Upshaw would catch his second touchdown of the day from Brandon Wells. The PAT by Jordan Puentes would make the score 23-3 Alabama A&M.
The G-Men would get the offense going in the fourth quarter as
Jeremy Runner would score from 2 yards out with left in the game. The PAT was missed by
Johnathan Wallace and the Tigers cut the lead to 23-9 and that would be as close as the Tigers would get.
For the game Grambling had 165 total yards on offense. Leading the way for the Tigers on defense was
Nicholas Peoples, who had 10 tackles, a sack and an interception.
The Tigers will hit the road next weekend as they will face the University of Louisiana Monroe Warhawks. Game time at Malone Stadium in Monroe will be at 6 p.m. The Next home game for the Tigers will be September 28
th as they host Lamar University. Gametime at Robinson Stadium will be at 6 p.m.
