Lady Tigers Pick up First Win of the Season Against UAPB

Grambling, La. (September 4, 2013) – In their home match of the season the Grambling State University Lady Tigers beat the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff 3-0 on Wednesday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

The crowd played a great factor in the game.  "The cheering and the energy from the crowd helped our ladies go to the next level.", said Head Volleyball Coach Demetria Keys-Johnson.  "When you looked at the players face you could tell that this was a home game."

The Lady Tigers played aggressively and attacked the net early.  After taking a 24-20 lead in game one, UAPB stormed back tying the game at 24.  The Lady Tigers would take advantage of a couple of UAPB errors to win the game 26-24.

In game two the Lady Tigers fell behind 12-10 to the Lady Golden Lions.  GSU would then battle back with great finesse play at the net and would take a 14-13 lead.  Game two would remain close until late when the Lady Tigers outscored UAPB 5-2 and would win game two 25-21.

Early in game three UAPB took advantage of some early GSU mistakes and took a 12-5 lead.  It wouldn't last long as the Lady Tigers battled back and would eventually take the lead and never relinquish control to the Lady Golden Lions.  Although the game remained close, the Lady Tigers would be victorious in game three winning 25-23 to sweep UAPB.

"This first win of the season feels great", said Head Volleyball Coach Keys-Johnson.  "All the players were much more focused tonight and faith in their own skills.  This win shows that we do have great team work.  I always tell the players that great team work brings about a win."

The Lady Tigers will travel to Dallas this weekend as they will participate in the SMU tournament.  The next home match for the volleyball team will be September 27th as they welcome SWAC divisional foe Texas Southern University.  The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
