Next Stop: Alcorn, versus the Braves

Some say the 2:45 p.m. game is SWAC championship preview

The Grambling State University G-Men get a tough test this week as they travel to Alcorn State University to take on the Braves, the SBN Black College Football's No.1 HBCU team for five consecutive weeks.

GSU (4-2, 4-0 SWAC) rolled to a 37-14 win over Alabama A&M University at home in the Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium in Grambling, but this week will be another story as they face the Braves (4-1, 3-0 SWAC). Against AAUMU, GSU quarterback Johnathan Williams threw for 255 yards and ran for another 95 yards to overtake the Bulldogs. He passed for three touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

Running back Martez Carter became the first G-Man to rush for more than 100 yards in a single game this season, rushing for 124 yards on 18 carries.

This midseason matchup between Grambling State and Alcorn State might have implications for the SWAC championship game in early December as both teams are picked to be championship contenders in their respective division.  The Tigers and the Braves go into the game with 4-game winning streaks. Alcorn had a bye week last weekend (Oct. 3), giving them extra time to prepare for the Tigers' air attack.

Grambling State (4-2, 4-0 SWAC) will have its defense tested by an impressive ASU offense. Alcorn (4-1, 3-0 SWAC) is running hot, partly based on the performance of running back Darry Ragsdale. Ragsdale has scored four touchdowns on the ground and rushed for 437 yards, averaging 8.6 yards per rush this season. ASU quarterback Jo Gibbs Jr. has rushed for 305 yards this season, including six passing touchdowns.

GSU's running defense has been a team strong point, limiting opponents to 110 yards per game. Just last month, the G-Men held Alabama State University and Jackson State University to fewer than 100 running yards each game.

The GSU Tigers face the ASU Braves Saturday (Oct. 17) at 2:45 p.m in Lorman, Mississippi, at Jack Spinks Stadium.
