Quarterback Eli Manning and the New York Giants did it again, this time with an amazing G-Man catch to win a game Sunday (Oct. 11) with only 21 seconds left.
Manning found Larry Donnell in the back of the end zone, Donnell leaped in between Antoine Bethea and NaVorro Bowman -- two of the San Francisco 49ers' best defenders -- and pulled down the pass, falling to his back. Donnell's catch pushed the Giants over the 49ers 30-27. The win gave Manning a record as the winningest quarterback in team history, and left Donnell with a special feeling.
"Eli put it up there, and I went up and got it," Donnell said after the game. "Once I got it, I held on tight."
Donnell, who attended Grambling State University as a kinesiology sport management major, was signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2012 after leaving GSU in 2011. He was on the Giants' practice squad during the 2012 season and played primarily on special teams during the 2013 season. He became the starting Giants tight end during the 2014 season.
While at Grambling State, the 6-foot-6 Donnell played at GSU from 2006-11. Before he became a G-Man and an NFL game-winning tight end, he played quarterback at Carroll High School in Ozark, Alabama. He switched from quarterback to tight end during his freshman year at GSU. He finished his college career with 38 receptions for 432 yards and 11 touchdowns.
GSU head football coach
Broderick Fobbs was impressed with Donnell's catch, and the play.
"It was quite a catch. It's the kind of play we live for in football. Threading like that takes discipline and hard work. It doesn't just happen," Fobbs said. "That is an example of what some of our G-Men can do. We're proud of Larry."
