GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University head football coach
Mickey Joseph announced the addition of
Jimmy Zachery Jr. to the staff as Defensive Tackles Coach and Defensive Run Game Coordinator.
Zachery a native of Opelousas, Louisiana, is an alumnus of Grambling State University. During his time at GSU, he was a member of the football team and played an integral role in helping the Tigers secure two SWAC Championships and one Black National Championship between 2001 and 2005.
After earning his Bachelor of Science in Leisure Studies with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation,
Zachery continued his academic journey at GSU, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sport Administration.
Zachery began his professional career in recreation, serving as the Director of Farmerville Parks and Recreation for eight years. He then transitioned into coaching, where he built an impressive résumé.
He gained extensive experience as a Defensive Line Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Union Parish High School, contributing to a State Championship victory in 2013 and seven District Championships.
Throughout his coaching career,
Zachery has held several key positions, including Assistant Head Coach at Dumas High School, Defensive Line Coach at Bastrop High School, and Defensive Coordinator at East Ascension High School.
He later returned to his alma mater, Opelousas High School, where he served as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director for five years. During his tenure, Coach
Zachery made history by leading the program to its first-ever football State Championship in 2023.
Following his success at Opelousas High School,
Zachery became the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Liberty Magnet High School. In his first season, he led the team to a 6–4 record and a playoff berth—an achievement the program had not reached in the previous six seasons. Notably, his first-year win total surpassed the combined number of wins from the prior six years.
