NEXT UP: GSU Tigers Take On UAPB Golden Lions

The Grambling State University Tigers (7-2, 7-0 SWAC) try to stay perfect in SWAC play and aim to stay in contention for the SWAC championship as veteran gunslinger quarterback Johnathan Williams and his teammates face the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions  (1-7, 0-6 SWAC) Saturday (Nov. 14).

With a win over UAPB, Grambling State could clinch the SWAC western division title and second season head football coach Broderick Fobbs would set a new career milestone -- eight straight wins as a head coach.  His previous streak was seven in 2014.

GSU handily beat Texas Southern University in the Red River State Fair Classic in Shreveport (Nov. 7) 41-15 and UAPB was beat 57-24 by Southern University at Golden Lion Stadium. The Jaguars set a new UAPB record for the most points scored by an opponent in the home stadium.

The weakness of UAPB has had a weakness stopping opponent passes. The Golden Lions rank last in the SWAC in passing defense and eight in total defense. GSU wide receivers will likely aim to take advantage of that weakness. Wide receiver Chad Williams is closing in on 700 yards for the season, and the G-Men are averaging 262 yards, the third-best in the conference.

Grambling State QB Johnathan Williams has been a touchdown throwing machine this season, and he is expected to exhibit his passing skills against the Golden Lions.  He ranks second in the FCS in touchdown passes with 26, and third in passing yards in the SWAC with 262 passing yards per game. Through the season Williams has showed poise, patience and arm strength. He will challenge the UAPB pass defense, which was manhandled by Prairie View A&M University.

Williams and the explosive GSU offense will have to watch out for UAPB's Willie Duncan, who led the UAPB defense against Southern with a whopping 15 tackles, two for losses. He is the #2 tackler in the SWAC with 38 solo tackles and 55 assists.

UABP quarterback Marcus Terrell led his team to one win and threw eight interceptions earlier in the season. Redshirt freshman Brandon Duncan had the last two starts. He had his second start of the UAPB season against Southern, passing for 114 yards and completing 15 of 30 pass attempts. He had one touchdown and one interception.

Grambling State won last season's matchup, 63-39. The GSU-UAPB game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. at Golden Lion Stadium.
