Classes ended at Grambling State University a couple of days ago and though most GSU students are using the weekend to get started studying for final exams, a group of students took a spectator bus to support the G-Men in the Saturday (Dec. 5) SWAC championship game in Houston.
The bus, holding about 46 students, left campus from the front of the Favrot Student Union about 9:30 a.m., another in a series of student bus trips to away football games. A spectator bus has been available since the beginning of the football season, when the G-Men played Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama.
This time, the G-Men are riding an undefeated regular season SWAC record of 9-0, hoping to make it 10-0 with a championship win at 3:02 p.m. at NRG Stadium against the Alcorn State University Braves. The Tigers beat the Braves by 35-34 with a blocked field goal in overtime earlier in the season.
Like so many road trips, a sudden case of drowsiness or insomnia kicked in for some students as some chose to get some shuteye and others tried but couldn't as a movie played. "I was sleeping and was awakened by someone who showed me that one of my favorite movies of all time, The Wiz, was being played," said Breyona Robinson, of Lafayette, Louisiana. "Of course I stayed up to watch the remainder of the movie."
Students paid a nominal fee to ride the bus, getting a couple of nights in a hotel and a game ticket that includes a post-game concert featuring R&B legend R.Kelly.
Some students chose to take the bus because they don't have transportation to travel to the games or they would prefer to save money on gas for the convenience. "I've been traveling on the spectator bus for a few years now, and it's so much easier than having to drive," said Jordan Cameron of Dallas. "All I have to do is pack a bag and load the bus."
