After a 34-10 victory over the Alabama State University Hornets, the G-Men head to Dallas for the 90
th Anniversary State Fair Classic football game against Prairie View A&M University Saturday (Sept. 26).
The annual football game, held at the Cotton Bowl, brings out thousands of celebrating the long academic histories and football rivalries at the two HBCUs.
The Grambling State Tigers (1-2, 1-0 SWAC) are aiming to bring home a second SWAC victory as they battle the Panthers (
x-x, 1-0 SWAC). It is the second conference game for head coach
Broderick Fobbs.
"We know this is going to be a good, tough game," GSU head football coach
Broderick Fobbs said. "Prairie View has a strong team, and no one should think otherwise. Our guys know we're in for a stiff challenge, and we've prepared to go four full quarters and take care of business."
Prairie View pulled off a close 53-49 game over Alabama A&M University Saturday, and the Panthers will be looking at ways to take down the Tigers this week. The Tigers won the 2014 Cotton Bowl 26-20 and Grambling State is counting on another win. It was during last year's State Fair Classic that then redshirt quarterback
Johnathan Williams stepped in and stepped up big time after injuries to the first and second string quarterbacks suffered injuries.
It was one of his first few times playing long minutes, and Williams took the opportunity and threw 21 of 31 for 250 yards, including a couple of touchdowns.
In the first SWAC game this season Williams led the Tigers in the win over Alabama State, throwing for 284 yards and four touchdowns.
The Panthers' Trey Green threw four touchdown passes and Courtney Brown ran for two consecutive 4th-quarter to help out score Alabama A&M last weekend. Green completed 27 of 40 passes for 345 yards with one interception for the Panthers (2-1, 2-0 SWAC). Nick Pitre had eight catches for 196 yards and three TDs, and Brown's 12-yard scoring run put the Panthers up 26-14 at halftime.
