GRAMBLING, La. (Volleyball)-- The Grambling State University Lady Tiger volleyball team opened their final weekend of home play on Friday night against Jackson State University. Coach
Demetria Keys-Johnson and her team came out with a spark but couldn't quite light the fire. Grambling fell in three sets to the visiting Lady Tigers with scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 25-23.
With the loss, GSU drops to 6-15, overall, and 4-11 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. JSU moves to 7-22 on the season and 6-9 in league play.
Newcomer
Chasity Nicks anchored the Grambling offense as she finished the night with a team high 13 kills. Nicks was followed by Javiennt Jones with nine kills.
Diemend Richardson and
L'Muriell Thrower kept the table set for the Lady Tigers with 16 assists each. Defensively,
Alleeyah Hensley finished the game with 11 digs while Nicks and
Kevreion Ward accounted for a solo block each.
As a team, GSU finished the night with 36 kills, 36 assists, 34 digs, nine team blocks, and five service aces.
For Jackson, Madison Wolf was the dominant hitter with nine for the night. Wolf was followed by Markayisha Masani and Dayjah Stewart with eight each. Arianna Salas was catalyst for the visiting Lady Tigers offense as she recorded 30 assists. Defensively, Masani accumulated nine digs and Kianna Shelton ended with three solo blocks.
Collectively, JSU finished the game with 40 kills, 38 assists, 31 digs, nine team blocks, amd two service aces.
Grambling State will be in action at home on Saturday for Senior Night as they face Mississippi Valley State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
