HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Football) – For the sixth straight week, the Grambling State University Tiger football team goes undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference play as they defeated Alabama A&M University in road action on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers swiftly defeated the Bulldogs, 56-17 and improve their overall record to 6-1 and 6-0 in conference play. Alabama A&M drop to 3-5, overall, and 3-4 in SWAC play.
GSU started off the first quarter by coming out blazing and scored a touchdown on their first possession. It took the Tigers three plays and 45 seconds to drive 64 yards for DeVante Kincade to link up with
Devohn Lindsey for a touchdown with 13:37 left in the first quarter.
Jonathan Wallace drilled a point after attempt through the uprights for a score of 7-0. Grambling scored again at the 10:29 mark when Kincade found
Dominique Leake for a five yard touchdown strike. Wallace and his golden foot set the score at 14-0.
To begin the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored three points when Nick Carden made a 21 yard field goal attempt with 9:36 left. Not to be outdone, Kincade and
Chad Williams connected for a three yard touchdown pass and Wallace made the point after try at the 8:39 mark, 21-3. Alabama A&M quickly answered with a 51 yard touchdown pass with 5:00 left, 21-10. The G-Man defense got in on the scoring fest when
Donovan McCray recovered a fumble for a touchdown with 47 seconds left in the quarter. Wallace made a point after attempt to make the score, 28-10.
AAMU turned a Grambling fumble into seven points. At the 11:05 mark of the third quarter, De'Angelo Ballard rushed for six yards to the end zone and Carden made the point after try, 28-17. The Tigers, in turn, scored again as Kincade linked up with
Chad Williams for a 19 yard touchdown with 8:32 left in the third quarter. Wallace made the point after try, 35-17. Kincade and Williams found each other again for a 29 yard touchdown and Walla drilled the point after attempt with 2:35 left in the quarter, 49-17.
Grambling's first drive of the fourth quarter resulted in the last touchdown when
Martez Carter rushed five yards to the end zone with 12:37 left. Wallace scored the point after try to make the score, 56-17.
Kincade finished the game going 20-of-36 for 241 yards for five touchdowns. Kelly led the running back corps with 23 carries for 200 yards and one touchdown. Williams was the top receiver with seven catches for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively,
De'Arius Christmas led the way with six total tackles, one tackle for loss of 13 yards, one forced fumble and one pass break up.
Ballard ended the day going 16-of-45 for 208 yards and one touchdown. Jordan Bentley was the leading rusher with 20 touches for 86 yards. Top receiver for the Bulldogs was Tevin McKenzie with four catches for 39 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Devonte Simon racked up 6.5 total tackles, one forced fumble, and two pass break ups.
Grambling will host Alabama State University for Senior Day in the 2016 Red River Classic at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
