Lady Tigers Late Surge Not Enough Versus Tulane

New Orleans, LA–The Grambling State University Lady Tigers fell short Saturday night, 79-56, as they were defeated by the Green Wave of Tulane University in their season opener in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The Lady Tigers struggled to gain momentum in the first quarter only scoring 12 points total. Tulane, on the other hand, finished the quarter with 23 points which gave them an 11-point lead.

However, Grambling did end the quarter with better energy that would give them a boost as they transitioned into the second. The Lady Tigers came out more aggressive in the second quarter, moving the ball better across the floor and getting good opportunities to score.Grambling State begin to put Tulane at the foul line which hurt them as they went into halftime down 25-35.

In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers closed the 10-point gap to only 6 at one point but could not take the lead. Tulane continued to control the game and regained that 10-point lead to go into the fourth. Tulane became too much for the Lady Tigers and pulled away hitting back to back three pointers that gave them a comfortable lead to end the game in victory. Tulane won by 23 points.

"Today's game was great for us in many ways. Yes, we would've like to have gotten the victory, but first games are tough. This game will show us things that we have to correct moving forward. For weeks we practice against each other which gets old at times and you want to go against someone else in another color uniform. We had a chance, but came up short. We'll go back to the drawing board and correct areas as we prepare for ULM. This is a marathon, not a sprint and the entire team understands that," said head coach Freddie Murray.

Sophomore guard Jazmine Boyd led the Lady Tigers with 13 points and 2 steals. Monisha Neal contributed 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Last season's leading scorer, Shakyla Hill, struggled offensively finishing with only 8 points. Hill added 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal.

As a team, the Lady Tigers had 19 turnovers and was just 6-16 from the three-point line. The Lady Tigers shot 32.3% from the field verses Tulane's 58%. Tulane got a lot of help from their bench ending the game with 25 bench points while Grambling had only 15.

The Lady Tigers will hit the hardwood again Tuesday, November 15 against the Lady Warhawks of ULM, at 6 p.m. at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, LA.
