HOUSTON, Texas (Football) – The Grambling State University Tiger football team (8-1, 8-0 SWAC) continued their dominance as the team defeated Texas Southern University (4-7, 4-5 SWAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers bested TSU with a score of 47-28.
The first quarter saw each team get on the board with seven points. Grambling scored first when
Martez Carter scampered into the end zone for three yards and
Jonathan Wallace made good on the point after attempt with 3:11 left, 7-0. For Texas Southern, Austin Watts connected with Averion Hurts and Eric Medina made the extra point with 1:05 left in the quarter, 7-7.
In the second quarter, TSU scored 21 unanswered points as the Tigers offense stalled and the defense was stumped. With 10:22 left in the quarter, the G-Men began to put together the first of five scoring drives.
Verlan Hunter connected with DeVante Kincade for a 34 yard touchdown and Wallace made an extra point attempt to make the score 28-14. At the 10:16 mark,
Percy Cargo came up with a huge fumble recovery to give the G-Men great field position at Texas Southern's 34 yard line. Kincade and the Tigers turn the fumble recovery to a touchdown and extra point with 10:01 left in the quarter, 28-21. The third and fourth scores came when Wallace made a 27 yard field goal at the 5:44 mark and a 41 yard field goal at the 1:56 mark, 28-27. The final score of the first half was made when Kincade hooked up with
Dominique Leake for a 32 yard touchdown pass with eleven seconds left, 33-28.
After halftime, Grambling put the pedal to the metal and never looked back. GSU scored one touchdown in each of the last two quarters. With 4:33 left in the third quarter, Carter punched his way into the end zone for a 10 yard touchdown and Wallace made the extra point, 40-28. The last touchdown came at the 2:35 mark of the fourth quarter as
Jestin Kelly forced his way through the Texas Southern defense and Wallace scored the extra point, 47-28.
GSU quarterback Kincade finished the day going 9-of-21 for one interception for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Kelly led Grambling's rushing attack with 20 carries for 133 yards and one touchdown. Leake was the leader for the receivers with three catches for 64 yards and one touchdown. The Grambling Golden Curtain defense was anchored by
Guy Stallworth with seven totals tackles, one tackle for loss of three yards and a fumble recovery for eight yards.
Hurts led the TSU offense going 12-of-24 for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Malik Webb led the team in receiving with seven catches for 81 yards and one touchdown. Jonathan Bowen was the leading rusher for Texas Southern with nine carries for 53 yards. Defensively, Jarius Morre led the team with seven total tackles, one sack for loss of eight yards, one tackle for loss of eight yards, one forced fumble and fumble recovery for 26 yards, and one interception for six yards.
Grambling will continue their road show in 43rd Annual Bayou Classic against Southern University in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La. on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m.
