NEW ORLEANS, La. (Football) --Both undefeated and looking to advance into the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game were Grambling State University and Southern University, but it would be head coach
Broderick Fobbs and the G-Men who would win at the 43
rd annual Bayou Classic with a final score of 52-30.
The Jaguars were first to put up points on the board with an 18 yard pass from quarterback Austin Howard to wide receiver Willie Quinn, but the Tigers retaliated as running back
Martez Carter carried the ball for 11 yards to put GSU just one point ahead of Southern, 7-6. Both teams' defense kept their opponents from scoring for eight minutes and twenty four seconds in the quarter but a 32-yard pass from
Chad Williams to wide receiver
Verlan Hunter followed by a successful point after try by Johnathan Wallace gave the Tigers a 14-6 lead.
Southern's defense carried over into the second quarter as the Tigers were only able to score from a 25 yard field goal. The Jaguars offense proved to be the better of the two as Quinn connected with the ball and ran for 85 yards, putting them only four points behind Grambling at halftime, 17-13.
In the second half of the game, Tigers quarterback
Devante Kincade ran 45 yards into the end zone and with a good point after try to follow gave the Tigers a 24-13 lead. To add to Grambling's offensive juggernaut, running back
Martez Carter held up to his moniker "Mr. Excitement" as he ran 66 yards for a touchdown with 5:56 left in the third quarter, 31-13. Wide receiver
Lyndemian Brooks got in the scoring frenzy as he carried the ball for 34 yards to score, 38-13. Although they weren't playing well defensively, Southern wasn't ready to give the win to the Grambling just yet as Tillery was able to connect with a pass from Howard for 14 and into the end zone for the touchdown, 38-20.
With only 1:50 off the clock, Williams caught a 7 pass from Kincade in the end zone for another touchdown, putting the Tigers up 25 points over the Jaguars, 45-20. Southern made many attempts to keep from Grambling from scoring again in the quarter but came up short as Carter ran 88 yards from a kickoff return, 52-23. Both teams toggled between possession of the ball for the remainder of the game but Southern would score again from a 7 yard pass between Howard and wide receiver Stacy Piro, 52-30.
Remaining undefeated and winning the Bayou Classic, the Tigers will play eastern division champions Alcorn State University in the championship game on Saturday, December 3 at 3 p.m. in Houston.
