Lady Tigers Burn Valley Devilettes, 79-55

Hill is hot with 19; Andrews, Poole each add double digits

Box Score GRAMBLING -- The Grambling State University Lady Tigers (14-12, 11-4 SWAC) defeated the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University (3-24, 1-16 SWAC) Monday (February 29) 79-55.

GSU led by 16 at half time, and in the fourth quarter led by as much as 26 points with under three minutes remaining. The Devilettes could not regain the lead and continued to struggle from the field. Shakyla Hill led the Lady Tigers with 19 points and 5 steals. Sophomore Bre'nae Andrews finished with 18 points and senior guard Chanta Poole added 15.

GSU head coach Nadine Domond was pleased with her team's dominating performance. "If we're gonna continue to win, we have to take care of things and be disciplined," she said shortly after the game ended at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

The game ended much as it started.

The Lady Tigers started the first quarter with aggression, offensively shooting 58.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line. Poole led GSU with 11 points and two steals. Defense was key as GSU forced 10 turnovers converting them to 16 points. The Devilettes were held to only 15 points and trailed by 11 at the end of the quarter.

GSU continued to forced turnovers and developed a 17-point lead within the first four minutes of the second quarter.  Andrews led with 13 points, nine of which were 3 point shots. Mississippi Valley forward Ashley Beals led the Devillettes with 15 points at the half. The Lady Tigers headed to the locker room with a 16-point lead.

Grambling State continued to dominate offensively and defensively, stretching the lead to 22 points with five minutes remaining in the third. The Devilettes could not handle the Lady Tigers defense as they continued to turn the ball over and gave GSU easy buckets. GSU had three players in double figures. Andrews led with 13 and Poole followed with 15.

The Lady Tigers continue regular season play Thursday (March 3) against Alabama A&M State University at 5:30 p.m. then Alabama State University on Saturday (March 5) before heading tothe SWAC tournament in Houston, Texas, at the Toyota Center on March 8.
