Box Score Grambling State University (19-20, 11-6 SWAC) nearly pulled off a ninth inning rally despite giving up four home runs, losing 11-8 to Alcorn State University. It was just GSU's second home loss at Wilbert Ellis Field.
In what might be a Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament matchup, the game featured 14 runs through three innings. Both Grambling State and Alcorn (14-25, 10-10 SWAC) scored seven runs each. Centerfielder Angel Peguero batted home the first two runs with a double that scored Daniel Barnett and Tray Bell in the first inning. ASU responded with two runs, taking a 4-2 lead after two innings.
A huge second inning allowed Grambling State to take a 5-4 lead, and it was GSU's only lead of the game. Left fielder Malcolm Boyce hit a RBI, scoring Tray Bell. Second baseman Larry Barraza smacked a pitch for a double, and Wesley Drain scored.
Third baseman Daniel Barnett spanked a pitch for a double, and Barraza scored. ASU hit two home runs in the third to take a 7-5 lead. Right fielder Diamyn Hall scored Grambling State's last run in the sixth inning, Barraza was credited with the RBI, and GSU trailed 10-8.
Grambling State travels to Prairie View A&M University Friday (April 29) for a three game series.
