Box Score The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions completed a series sweep of the Grambling State University Tigers Sunday (May 8) with a 14-11 win at Wilbert Ellis Field.
Grambling State first baseman Robert Lopez hit home runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Lopez was 2-for-5 and two RBIs. Second baseman Larry Barraza was 2-for-5 with four RBIs and hit the first home run over left-field fence in the third inning.
Collectively the Tigers (22-23; 15-8 SWAC) scored 11 runs and had 14 hits and 10 RBIs Sunday. On the series, Grambling State totaled 19 runs, 32 hits and 18 RBIs. Barraza hit 7-for-12, adding three runs, six RBIs and he homered twice during the series. Friday night was his best game when he went 4-for-4, contributing one RBI and one run.
A big UAPB (20-22, 16-5 SWAC) sixth inning hurt the Tigers. The Golden Lions scored eight runs on six hits with two home runs. Grambling State stopped the momentum by catching a sacrifice bunt.
Trailing 12-5, GSU tightened the game with six runs through three innings, putting up two zeroes on the offensive end for the seventh and eighth inning and five zeroes in the game. The Tigers held the Golden Lions scoreless in 14 innings during the weekend series.
Grambling State counterpunched in the bottom of the sixth with four runs. Catcher Johan Mojica (2-for-4) walked, left fielder Malcom Boyce (2-for-5) singled and Drain walked. DH Ace Felder (2-for-3 two RBIs) walked and Mojica scored. Third baseman Daniel Barnett (2-for-4 one RBI) walked and Boyce scored.
Golden Lions' Michael Bradley came in to pitch. He faced three batters. Drain and Felder tallied two runs, cutting the eight run deficit to 12-9. Lopez hit a pitch 335 feet for his second solo home run of the game. Barraza's RBI single scored Felder and Grambling State trailed 12-11.
Grambling State's next home game is scheduled for Thursday (May 12) versus Jackson State University at 6 p.m. at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
