Grambling, La. (Football) -- The Grambling State Tiger football team is geared up for first game of the 2016 campaign in Eddie G. Robinson Stadium on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. The G-Men will go head-to-head with the Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons.
Grambling aims to win the team's first home opener since 2009 and first season opener of the
Broderick Fobbs' era.
A Tigers home win will end a six-season drought of home season openers dated back to 2009. The last G-Men home victory was on Sept. 12, 2009 against in-state opponent Northwestern State University to the tune of 38-17.
Grambling's last season opening win was in 2011 when the Tigers defeated Alcorn State 21-14 on Sept. 3, 2011 at the Port City Classic in Shreveport.Â
The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Western Division champions have a new gunslinger and starter in University of Mississippi transfer, Devante Kincade. He will replace 2015 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, Jonathan Williams.
Kincade will go into battle Saturday against the Dragons with the second ranked conference scoring offense from a season ago. Grambling State torched defenses with 41.3 points per game and 455.2 yards per game in 2015. Â The team earned a 9-3, overall, 9-1 league record and rallied to nine consecutive wins, longest streak of Fobbs' tenure. The offense will also feature All-SWAC honoree,
Martez Carter. During the 2015 season, he scored 15 touchdowns for 93 total points. Carter ranked third in scoring touchdowns and fourth in total scoring last season.
The G-Men defense comes into the contest locked and loaded with a powerful arsenal. Grambling was ranked second in the nation and the conference in tackle for loss with 113.5 total tackles for 497 yards. The Tigers also racked up 38 sacks for the season.
Arkez Cooper and
Guy Stallworth return with a wealth of knowledge to replace the loss of
Michael Jolivet and
Troy Roach.
The last meeting of these two schools was on Oct. 20, 2012 and Grambling defeated the Dragons, 22-7.
