HOUSTON, Texas (Women's basketball) – On Monday night, the Grambling State University women's basketball team went head-to-head with Prairie View A&M University on the road. The Lady Tigers hopes of a win were cut short when a GSU committed a foul to send PVAMU's Jeronia Allen split her free throws with 13 second left. Allen's made free throw set the final score at 51-49.
With the loss, Grambling drops to 5-12, overall, and 3-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference. Prairie View moves to 7-10, overall, and 2-3 in conference play.
The Lady Tigers came out lagging and never recovered. Missed opportunities and costly turnovers kept Grambling out of the game and opened the door for PVAMU.
Shakyla Hill led the way for Grambling with 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. The team was 36.5 percent from field goal range, 10 percent from the three point arc, and 55.6 percent from the free throw line.
For Prairie View, Allen was the leading scorer with 23 points. La'Sha Haynes led the way in rebounding with 11 boards. Tori Carter kept the table set for the Lady Panthers with eight assists. Carter also made her presence felt in the paint with two blocks. The team was 39.2 percent from the field, 26.7 percent from three point range, and 70 percent from the stripe.
Grambling will take to the court again on Saturday, Jan. 21 at home in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center as they face Jackson State University. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
