MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Grambling State defeated Alabama State 60-45 in each school's opening game of SWAC play on Monday. The win marks the second straight for Grambling State (3-9, 1-0 SWAC), while Alabama State (1-10, 0-1 SWAC) has now lost its last six consecutive contests.
Grambling State was led by Shakyla Hill, who had a game high 22 points along with nine rebounds, four steals, and four assists. Jazmin Boyd contributed 15 points along with three boards in the win.
Alabama State was led by Britney Wright, who netted nine points along with five boards in the loss.
Takerra Parsons has emerged in a starting role with her superb defense and Head Coach Freddie Murray stated, " Yes, she's gaining confidence each game. We preach know your role and do what you do best and she's doing that."
Grambling State got off to a commanding 20-5 lead after one quarter of play. GSU would take a 35-21 lead into the second half. Alabama State would close the gap in the third, outscoring Grambling State 12-8 in the third to trim the deficit to ten points heading into the fourth quarter. The Tigers would hold on in the fourth, outscoring the Hornets 17-12 for the win.
"The team came out pretty focused tonight coming off the Christmas break, We beat a very good team tonight. Hill and Boyd played well for us and we got great production from our bench. We know each night is going to bring a different challenge for us but I like our chances," said Head Coach Murray.
Grambling State will face Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Alabama on Wednesday, January 4 @ 5:30 p.m.
