GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games after the Lady Tigers knocked off rival Southern, 2-1, in double-overtime on Sunday afternoon in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Grambling State (5-5-0 overall, 3-0-0 SWAC), which sits atop the SWAC standings tied with Texas Southern, played to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes of action.
The game remained tied until the 69th minute when Grambling State earned a corner kick.
Jasmine Smith took the kick and played it to
Kaylee Holt, who dished the ball back to Smith. Smith launched a shot to the far post, which beat Lady Jaguars goalkeeper Kendra Lewis for the goal and give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
Grambling State held the lead until the 80th minute when Taylor Coleman collected the loose ball in the penalty and knocked it into the back of the net for the equalizer.
After 90 minutes of play, the two teams headed into overtime. Neither team could get much going offensively in the first 10 minutes, but in the final six minutes, Grambling State picked up the intensity and used it to capture its third victory.
After a second yellow card was handed out by the referee to Lewis in the 105th minute, the Lady Tigers didn't waste too much time testing backup goalkeeper Abby Ferris. Just one minute after Lewis was sent off, Grambling State played the ball into the penalty area and it was punched away, but
Florence David was waiting for that loose ball. She quickly pounced on the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Turning Point
There were 32 total fouls and eight yellow cards handed out, but perhaps the biggest card dished out by the center official was in the 105th minute to Southern goalkeeper Kendra Lewis.
Lewis had received a yellow card in the 32nd minute and continued to play well in the net for the Lady Jaguars.
However, in the 105th minute, Lewis and
Florence David battled for a loose ball. While Lewis was able to snag the ball, she also stepped on David. That forced the center official to send Lewis off for her second yellow card.
Just one minute later, David played the hero with the game-winning goal.
