LORMAN, Miss.| The Grambling State University women's soccer team opened the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) schedule with a seven-match unbeaten streak and sat in first place with three games remaining in prime position to win a regular season championship.
However, that seems like a distant memory as the Lady Tigers have suffered back-to-back SWAC losses and now sit on the outside looking in and needing help with one regular season game remaining after Grambling State fell to Alcorn State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Spinks-Casem Stadium.
"We allowed two goals with their first-two shots on frame today," Grambling State first-year head coach
Justin Wagar said. "This is the second game in a row and fourth game this year where our opponents have scored on their first shot. I was not happy with this performance today."
Coming into Sunday's game, Grambling State sat two points back of Howard in the standings. But after a crazy Sunday, the conference regular season crown is up for grabs.
Howard tied Prairie View A&M and concludes the season with 22 points. Alabama State routed Southern, 8-1, and is 7-2-0 on the season with 21 points. Grambling State (8-7-1 overall, 6-2-1 SWAC) and Texas Southern all sit tied for the second spot with 21 points with one match remaining.
Grambling State will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday for Senior Day, while Alabama State visits Alabama A&M and Texas Southern travels to Prairie View A&M.
The Lady Tigers do hold tiebreakers over Howard, Alabama State and Texas Southern based on head-to-head results.
On Sunday, Alcorn State (3-8-0, 2-6-0) played the spoiler role to the Lady Tigers on Sunday as the Lady Braves notched goals in the 10th and 17th minute and didn't look back in the upset win over Grambling State.
In the 10th minute, Mireya Gonzalez collected a rebound and knocked the ball into the back of the net to give the Lady Braves a 1-0 lead.
Just seven minutes later, Rita Okoro, who assisted on the Gonzalez goal, recovered a missed shot by Anjelica Dugan and fired it past Lady Tigers goalkeeper
Jordan Woodward for the goal.
