Grambling State stuns Texas Southern

Box Score HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University volleyball team stunned Texas Southern, 3-1, on Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match at the H&PE Arena.
 
Grambling State (14-19 overall, 8-7 SWAC) took the opening set, 25-23, but Texas Southern answered and tied the match at 1 after a 25-18 second-set victory. After intermission, Grambling State took the third set, 25-20, and won the match in the fourth set with a 25-22 victory.
 
Coming into the night, Alabama State had already clinched the top spot with Alabama A&M and Texas Southern vying for the second position. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is holding down the fourth spot, while Grambling State is in fifth. The win by GSU avoided a season sweep at the hands of Texas Southern.
 
Talicia Lang and Kevreion Ward paced the Grambling State offensive attack with 13 kills each. Diemend Richardson and L'Muriell Thrower recorded 22 and 13 assists, respectively. Erineka Mollere led the way defensively with 24 digs, while Chasity Nicks registered 13 and Richardson 11.
 
Kirby Anderson led three Texas Southern players in double-digit kills with 16. Alexis Austin added 12 kills, while Cassidy Jannson tallied a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs. Asia Howard notched a double-double of 24 assists and 12 digs. Breyanna York and Alyssa Chuidian recorded 11 and 10 assists, respectively. Erin Adams paced the defense with 23 digs.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished the match with 44 kills., 73 digs, 41 assists, 13.0 total team blocks and 11 service aces.
· Texas Southern registered 60 kills, 83 digs, 54 assists, 8.0 total team blocks and three service aces.
· Grambling State hit .194 in the opening set with 13 kills on 36 total attacks.
· Texas Southern hit .209 in the second set with 15 kills in 43 total attacks.
· There were 12 ties and five lead changes in the four-set match.
 
News & Notes
· Grambling State has victories over each conference foe except for Alabama State and Alabama A&M. GSU has to face Southern twice.
· Grambling State split the season series with Texas Southern, with each team picking up a road victory.
· GSU has two matches with Southern, and one match with Arkansas-Pine Bluff remaining on its SWAC schedule.
