GSU rallies for five-set victory

SHREVEPORT, La. | The Grambling State University volleyball team got back into the win column on Thursday night as the Lady Tigers rallied for a five-set victory over Centenary (La.), 3-2, at the Gold Dome.
 
Grambling State (8-15) won the match 18-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 15-10.
 
Kevreion Ward paced four Lady Tigers in double-digit kills with 16. Chasity Nicks added 15 kills, while Jaivenna Jones registered 12. Tess Reynolds chipped in with 10 kills. Diemend Richardson and L'Muriell Thrower finished with 26 and 23 assists, respectively. Erineka Mollere led the way defensively with 22 digs. Talicia Lang tallied 15 digs, while Thrower added 10.
 
Michaela Brantley and Desire Frey led the way offensively for Centenary with seven kills. Allison Lazewski and Brittany Risner each registered 13 digs. Marissa Sandoval led the Ladies (8-11) with 17 digs, while Hailey Lawson and Frey finished with 12 and 10, respectively.
 
Turning Point
With the match tied at 1, the Ladies picked up a 25-20 third set victory. But much like the first matchup, Grambling State rallied and took the fourth set, 25-14, to set up the deciding fifth set.
 
In the final set tied at 3, the Lady Tigers used a 7-2 run, capped by Diemend Richardson kill, to extend the advantage to 10-5.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished the match with 64 kills, 67 digs, 56 assists, 15.0 total blocks and 10 service aces.
· The Lady Tigers held the Ladies to just a .095 hitting percentage.
· Centenary tallied 37 kills, 55 digs, 31 assists, 11 services aces and 5.0 total blocks.
· Grambling State hit .247 in the five set-thriller, including .375 and .346 in the fourth and fifth sets.
 
News & Notes
· Grambling State picked up its eighth win of the season, which is the most since victories prior to the 2011 season and surpassed last year's win total of seven.
· The Lady Tigers improved to 3-3 in five-set matches.
· Grambling State swept the season series against Centenary, winning both matches in five sets.
