Lady Tigers conclude season at SWAC Volleyball Tournament

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. | The Grambling State University volleyball team concluded its season on Friday afternoon as the Lady Tigers fell in four sets, 3-1, to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Volleyball Tournament at the Williams Assembly Center.
 
Grambling State ends the season at 16-23 overall, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff (13-19) advances to the semifinals on Saturday to meet Alabama State, which beat host Jackson State in the quarterfinals.
 
The Lady Golden Lions won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-22, but the Lady Tigers rallied andcut the margin in half with a 25-20 third-set victory. But Arkansas-Pine Bluff proved to be too much with a 25-16 fourth-set win.
 
Kevreion Ward led three Grambling State players in double-digit kills with 12. Chasity Nicks and Talicia Lang each added 10 kills, with Lang finished with 18 digs. L'Muriell Thrower and Diemend Richardson chipped in 25 and 17 assists, respectively. Defensively, Erineka Mollere led the way with 18 digs, while Thrower added 13 and Kiara Freeman recorded 11.
 
Lisa Casimie paced Arkansas-Pine Bluff with 15 kills and 13 digs. Kendalle Howard registered a double-double of 17 digs and 14 kills, while Lauren Corby recorded 11 kills. Britney Sahlmann tallied a match-high 46 assists, while Jade Sanlin led the way defensively with 18 digs.
 
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished the match with 48 kills, 78 digs, 46 assists, 12.0 total team blocks and three service aces.
· Arkansas-Pine Bluff tallied 51 kills, 74 digs, 48 assists, 7.0 total team blocks and six service aces.
· Grambling State hit .243 in the opening set with 14 kills on 37 attempts.
· The Lady Golden Lions also had a good first set by hitting .278 with 14 kills in 36 total attacks.
· There were 16 ties, including 12 in the second set, and 10 lead changes, with eight coming in the second stanza.
 
News & Notes
· Grambling State finished the season with its best record prior to 2011 with a 16-23 mark.
· Arkansas-Pine Bluff took two of three matches this season with Grambling State and outscored the Lady Tigers, 8-4.
· The Lady Tigers made their first SWAC Volleyball Tournament appearance since 2011 when Grambling State finished the season with a 9-22 overall record (5-3 SWAC).
