GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team opens the 2017-18 season on Friday morning as the Lady Tigers make the short trip to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech. Tip-off from the Thomas Assembly Center is set for 11 a.m.

Louisiana Tech will broadcast the game on ESPN 97.7 FM.

The Lady Techsters got the better of Grambling State last season, defeating the Lady Tigers by 14 points.

There have been 237 days since that last contest and the Lady Tigers are looking to open the season with a victory over the Lady Techsters. Grambling State is coming off a historic season as the Lady Tigers became the first-ever Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) school to win a postseason women's basketball tournament game.

Grambling State, Co-SWAC Regular Season champions, defeated Ole Miss in the opening round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), before falling in the second round to Tulane, 66-49. Grambling State completed the 2016-17 season with a 19-15 overall mark and a 14-4 conference record.

The Lady Tigers, predicted to finish second in the preseason poll by the SWAC, return six veteran players, including SWAC Preseason Player of the Year, Shaklya Hill. Other key players returning for Grambling State including,

Jazmin Boyd,
Jazmine Torian,
Monisha Neal and
Darae Taylor.

The Lady Tigers will return to action at home on Monday, Nov. 14 against the University of Louisiana- Monroe. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

- Former coaches of the Lady Tigers include Nadine Domond and Patricia Cage-Bibbs.
- The Lady Tigers were named co-regular season champions during the 2016-2017 and earned a No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament, making it their first appearance in the SWAC title game in 17 years.
- Grambling made its first postseason appearance since 2000 earning a bid to the WNIT.
- In the 2016-2017 season, the Lady Tigers made history, becoming the first SWAC school to win a postseason game, NCAA or WNIT, by defeating SEC opponent Ole Miss 78-75.
