Lady Tigers drop road contest to Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. | Shakyla Hill scored 15 points and Monisha Neal added 11, but it wasn't enough as the Grambling State University women's basketball team fell to Arkansas State, 76-56, on Saturday afternoon.
 
Hill scored 15 points, including five at the free-throw line, grabbed eight boards, with seven steals and dished out a pair of assists. Neal chipped in with 11 points and six assists.
 
Akasha Westbrook paced Arkansas State with 16 points, including going 8-of-10 on free throws. She added seven rebounds, six steals and two assists. Lauren Bradshaw tallied a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, with a pair of blocks.
 
Turning Point
Grambling State (3-5) raced out to a 8-0 lead to begin the game after Neal sank a jumper with 8:05 remaining in the first quarter, but Arkansas State battled back and used a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 13-8 advantage with 3:22 left.
 
The Red Wolves extended the lead to 18-12 after one quarter, but the Lady Tigers cut the margin to 20-18 after a bucket by Deja McKinney with 7:25 remaining in the second quarter.
 
Arkansas State answered and used a 10-0 run, capped by a Bradshaw layup to give the Red Wolves a 30-18 advantage with 4:09 left. Grambling State was able to trim the deficit to 34-24 as the two teams entered the half.
 
The Red Wolves pushed the advantage to 48-32 after a Tahlon Heckert layup with 3:19 left in the third, but the Lady Tigers cut the double-digit deficit to 52-44 after a Hill layup with 9:27 left. That would be as close as Grambling State would get.
 
Inside The Numbers
* Grambling State was 20-of-62 (32.3 percent) shooting and 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
* Arkansas State shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) and 72.1 percent (31-of-43) from the charity stripe.
* Grambling State scored 38 points in the paint, 24 points off 26 Arkansas State turnovers, 19 bench points and 12 fastbreak points.
* The Red Wolves finished with 39 bench points, 32 points in the paint, 27 points off 24 Grambling State turnovers and four fastbreak points.
