Grambling, La. (Men's basketball)-- Grambling State University's Avery Ugba produced his fourth straight double-double, notching 20 points and 11 rebounds. However, it wasn't enough for the Tigers to overcome the bite of the Texas Southern Tigers as they were defeated 77-70 on Saturday at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Center.
With the loss, Grambling (10-15, 5-7 SWAC) drops their third consecutive game and just second home loss of the season. GSU hasn't loss at home contest since January 7, 2017 when they faced Southern University. Tigers
Remond Brown scored 17 points and
Ervin Mitchell scored 14 points.
TSU (14-10, 10-1 SWAC) used a quick start to jump out to a 27-15 first half led. The Tigers battled back to cut the led to 34-26 before half time. Grambling State returned from halftime with more urgency, taking the led 44-43 with a 18-9 run.
Five consecutive layups in a row from
Drake Wilks, Ugba and Brown trimmed TSU led to 42-36. Mitchell closed the gap with another layup and Brown drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner to bring
Grambling State within one. One possession later Brown landed a layup and Grambling State took their first led for 18 seconds.
Texas Southern's Zach Lofton led the charge with 23 points, Marvin Jones added 15 points and Kevin Scott finished with 14 points.
Grambling State faces Prairie View A&M University at 7:30pm Monday in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Center.Â
