GRAMBLING, La. (Men's basketball) – With one second left on the clock, Prairie View A&M University's Tevin Bellinger put up a Hail Mary three pointer that fell just short of the goal to hand Grambling State University their first victory in three weeks. The Tigers were able to snatch one from the Panthers, 61-58, on Monday night in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Centers.
Grambling snapped their three game skid and improves to seventh place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with an overall record of 11-15 and a conference record of 6-7. Prairie View drops to 8-18, overall, and 5-7 in league play.
The G-Men opened the game by jumping on the Panthers and forcing them to make costly turnovers.
Averyl Ugba was a force to be reckoned with as he quickly accumulated a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds in just the first half of play. Not to be outdone,
Remond Brown racked up 17 points in the first half.
In the second half, PVAMU tried to change the pace of the game and were steam rolled by the Tigers on their way to a win.
Ervin Mitchell was the captain in this half as he scored 10 points and came up with two steals.
???????Ugba was the leader for GSU as he finished the night with his fourth double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds. He was followed by Brown with 19 points and six rebounds. Mitchell added 15 points and one block to the mix. The assist leader for the night was
Chase Cormier with four dishes.
GSU was 38.6 percent from the field, 30 percent from three point range, and 77.4 percent from the free throw line.
Prairie View was led by Troy Thompson with 15 points. Ja'Donta Blakely recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Panthers were 34.1 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from the arc, and 84.4 percent from the stripe.
The G-Men will be on the road Saturday, Feb. 18 as they travel to face Jackson State University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
