GRAMBLING, La. (Women's basketball) – Coach Fred Murray and the Grambling State University women's basketball team continued their dominance as they pulled off an upset over Prairie View A&M University, 60-55, in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on Monday night.
The Lady Tigers place themselves atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference with an overall record of 12-12 and a conference record of 10-3. PVAMU drops to 8-16, overall, and 3-9 in the SWAC.
Grambling started out sluggish in the first half of play. The Lady Panthers were able to go up 27-16 at halftime.
In the third quarter, GSU came out with a renewed drive and, all-around weapon,
Shakyla Hill began her offensive juggernaut. Hill and the Lady Tigers outscored Prairie View 22-10 to take the lead with a score 38-37 going into the fourth. PVAMU attempted to mount a comeback with Tori Carter and Alexus Parker but
Monisha Neal played a key role in a 5-0 run for Grambling that took the game to overtime.
In overtime, GSU took control and never looked back as
Chantiara Lewis hit two three pointers.
Hill led the way for the Lady Tigers with 18 points, nine boards, eight assists and eight steals. Hill was followed by
Jazmin Boyd with 12 points.
The team was 40.6 percent from the field, 14.3 percent from three point range and 55.6 percent from the free throw line.
Carter led Prairie View with 18 points and Dominique Newman added 13. La'Sha Haynes was the rebounder for the Lady Panthers with nine on the night.
The team was 37.9 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from the arc, and 58.3 percent from the stripe.
???????Grambling will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as the team heads to Jackson State University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
