Lady Tigers Go Winless in Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, La. (Softball) –The Grambling State University softball team (1-9)  traveled to Alexandria, La. to compete in the Louisiana State University, Alexandria (LSUA) Mardi Gras tournament over the weekend. The Lady Tigers saw action against Texas Wesleyan University, Lindenwood University-Belleville, and LSUA.

Grambling competed but finished 0-4 for the weekend.

Game One

???????GSU's first game of the weekend was against Texas Wesleyan on Friday morning. The Lady Tigers were defeated in five innings with a score of 11-0. The Lady Rams scored one run in the first inning, one run in the third inning, three runs in the fourth inning, and six run in the fifth inning. Caitlin McDowell picked up the loss with five innings pitched and facing 30 batters. Lauren Wernet scooped up the win with four inning pitched, three strike outs and one hit.

Game Two

In game two, the Lady Tigers faced off against Lindenwood-Belleville on Friday afternoon. GSU was defeated in five innings with a score of 11-3.  The Lady Lynx scored two runs in the first inning, six runs in the third inning, and three runs in the fifth inning. Grambling scored one run in the third inning when Hailey Haynes singled to left center field to drive in Armani Babin, 11-1. Babin was a pinch runner for Kenyshae Beasley after she singled to right center field to reach first base. GSU's last two runs came in the fifth inning. Adrianna Young crossed home plate after Beasley hit a triple into deep left center field, 11-2. Young bunted to reach first base.  The last run for the Lady Tigers was scored when Allye Hartley bunted to drive Beasley in, 11-3. D'Maria Matthews picked up the loss on the mound with five inning pitched, eight earned runs, and two strike outs. Kaitlin Grohman was the winning pitcher with four innings pitched, three strike outs, and one earned run.

Game Three

Grambling's third game featured the Lady Tigers going head to head with the tournament host, LSU Alexandria on Saturday afternoon. Grambling dropped the game by one run in seven innings with a score of 5-4. GSU scored the first run of the game as Mercedes Williams came home on a General's error, 1-0. Williams reached first base on an error. The Lady Tigers took the lead in the third inning when Haynes scored on an error, 2-0. Haynes walked to reach first base, moved to second when Hartley was hit by a pitch, and rounded to third base on an error. LSUA began to rally and scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, 2-1. Grambling scored a run in the fourth inning in an attempt to stay the LSU Alexandria rally. Tiffany Doss scored when Tayler Lenz-Selvera grounded out, 3-1. Doss reached first base after she was hit by a pitch and advanced to third when Samara Perry doubled into deep center. In the top of the sixth inning, GSU scored their last run as Perry came across home plate after Williams singled up the middle, 4-1. Perry rounded the base on an error by LSU, Alexandria. LSUA knotted the game up with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and won the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. McDowell suffers the loss for Grambling with 6.2 innings pitched, five earned runs, and three strike outs. Madison Resch picked up the win for the Generals with one inning pitched for no earned runs and a strike out.  

Game Four

The Lady Tigers final game was against Lindenwood on Friday evening. Grambling was defeated with a score of 8-4. The game was deadlocked until the fourth inning when GSU got on the board with two runs. The Lady Tigers first run came when Williams scored after Hartley doubled to right center field, 1-0. Williams reached first base after she was hit by a pitch, and reached second based on a batted ball. The second run came as Haynes crossed home plate on an error, 2-0. Haynes reached first base, reached second base after Hartley hit a double, and reached third base on an error. The Lynx quickly answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, 3-2. Grambling didn't waste time with their rebuttal as they scored two more runs to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning, 4-3. McDaniel scored as Lenz-Selvera singled down the left field line. McDaniel bunted to reach first base, rounded second after Young hit into a fielder's choice, and advanced to third after Wiliams hit a single through a hole at second base. Young scored the Lady Tigers last run as she crossed home on an error. Young reached first base on a fielder's choice, moved to second base on Williams's single, and advanced to third base on Lenz-Selvera's single. Lindenwood-Belleville came roaring back and scored a combined five runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to set the score at 8-4. Alexus Brown picked up the loss for Grambling with six innings pitched for eight earned runs with two walks. Grohman earns the win with two earned runs, one walk, and one strike out.  

The Lady Tigers will return to the diamond as they travel on Tuesday, Feb. 21 for a double header with Centenary College in Shreveport, La. Game times are set for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
