GRAMBLING, La. (Men's basketball) – The Grambling State University men's basketball team has been slowly climbing the ladder of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and picking up crucial wins. The Tigers are on a two game win streak and seeking a third victory to bolster their chances of hosting a quarterfinal game. The G-Men will try to continue their winning ways as they travel to Pine Bluff, Ark. to face the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. GSU will continue their road trip on Monday in Itta Bena, Miss. against Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) at 7:30 p.m.
Grambling (12-15, 7-7 SWAC) have been on a mad dash to move up in the conference standings. The Tigers are ranked in the top five of five categories (scoring offense, field goal percentage, steals, offensive rebounds, defensive rebound percentage. Avery Ugba has been the anchor of the G-Men as he is averaging nearly a double-double with 12.4 points and 9.8 rebounds. He has finished four of the last five contests with double-doubles and leads the conference in rebounds.
Ervin Mitchell and
Remond Brown are also high contributors as they are averaging 16.7 points and 14.7 points, respectively.
The Golden Lions (7-21, 6-9 SWAC) come into this weekend's contest after a 73-55 loss to Prairie View A&M University on Monday. Deshon Bayless led the way for UAPB with 15 points. In the last meeting between these teams, Grambling slipped by Arkansas-Pine Bluff to the tune of 61-53. Brown was the leader for GSU with 17 points and Ugba recorded 11 rebounds.
???????MVSU (4-24, 4-11 SWAC) has been on a five game losing skid with their latest loss at the hands of Texas Southern University with a score of 92-61. Marcus Romain recorded 21 points and Jamal Watson finished with 12 rebounds. When last Grambling faced the Delta Devils, Grambling bested the team in overtime with a score of 77-74. Mitchell recorded 24 points and Ugba finished with 13 total rebounds.
